Storm Phobias

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Fri Jun 11, '10, 6:00 pm

Have you ever known or seen a dog or other pet that was afraid of storms...thunder and lightning and all the other things that accompany storms such as high winds, hail, etc.?

Well, those pets may have something known as "storm phobias". Here is some information about this and some ways you may try to help your pet during this time.

Cool link, SS!

Yes, my dog is terrified of thunderstorms. I never thought he could have a "phobia", and I thought all dogs were afraid of storms (and fireworks too, for that matter). Interesting stuff.

Same here. My dad's dog is terrified of storms especially and has a tendency to run and hide behind the computer desk, often pulling things off in the process and getting in a tangle. Then again, he is a proper bundle of nerves too and always on edge. :D

Never had that problem personally, though in retrospect I'm kind of surprised. I've had cats over the years that would be afraid in an extremely bad storm, but not any old thunderstorm.

I do have a cat that is deathly afraid of pots and pans, though. If he hears a pan move or one being pulled out a cabinet, he runs and hides.

Maybe it thinks someone has some sinister plan for them. ;) But really, that's a new one Thoul. I've never heard of animals having such phobias. Bad experience perhaps?

Maybe. Occasionally a pan does get dropped, so perhaps one landed near him once and spooked him. Or maybe he just doesn't like the loud noise of the pans for some reason. Who can say? *shrug*

I wonder how much these "storm phobias" have to do with how sensitive animals are and their keen senses or abilities to detect danger or something bad about to happen. I have always heard that an animal had a special sense to warn them of bad weather coming or something bad about to happen.
