Depth of Characters

What personality types do you find the most attractive in games? Do you prefer characters as dynamic agents who move the plot forward or as flat participants who merely react to the plot?

Personally I like characters that are active participants in the plot more than generic ones who react.

The ones I hate are in those old fashioned games or in rpgmaker games that do this.

NPC In Town 1: You must save the princess!

*20hrs of gameplay and a saved princess later*

Heh, yeah, those are annoying. It's understandable in older games, but not very excusable in anything put out since the early PlayStation days.

I miss the playstation, the blocky graphics, the decent fighting games, the cheesy storylines, the FFVII fanboys gawking over Tifa Lockheart...... lol
