Cyber pets

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Fri May 22, '09, 8:06 am

What do you all think of cyber pets....aka the "pets" you can adopt online?

I think they are cute, but I've never had any.

Anyone else ever have any cyber pets? If so, what are/were they?

Nope, never had any. I considered it sometimes, but never got one.

About the same as CW - I've considered it once or twice, but never looked into it much. I once entertained the idea of making some Phantasy Star versions. Never went forward with it, though.

Could you really do that???? If so, I think that would be a fun idea! :)

I too agree that I would look into this more if this was implemented. Although I apologize in advance if this will cause you undue stress in having these done.

Re: cyber pets, I played Furry Paws for a while and enjoyed it. I'd go back to it if I had time on my hands. The trick to making progress in Furry Paws is to enter your dogs in the maximum number of available shows each day, but that's pretty effort-intensive. In that regard I daresay it is true to life, since looking after a dog and training him/her for sports must be time consuming, albeit rewarding.

In a sense, I think it's a shame that so many people, both children and adults, are sitting in front of computers caring for cyber pets rather than enjoying the companionship of real, flesh and blood animals. I'll include myself in that category, inasmuch as I'm desperate for a dog but concerned that my heavy work schedule would be a significant impediment to responsible pet ownership. No doubt it is far better for people to fulfil their need for a pet with an electronic surrogate if they cannot make the lifetime commitment that a real animal represents. Too many pets end up on the streets or, if they're more fortunate, in rescue kennels because their owners underestimated the time, money, and attention the animals would need.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. - C. That's one reason that I prefer cats over dogs. They provide plenty of companionship, despite stereotypes, and they're a lot less time intensive to care for and quite possibly more practical to have in that sense for someone with a busy schedule.

I still love dogs, though...if only I wasn't TERRIBLY allergic to them. :(
