Cutscenes... what's the best kind?

Postby Thoul » Fri Mar 7, '08, 3:59 am

In the past ten years of gaming, cutscenes have become a major focus in many kinds of video games. And there are lots of different kinds of cutscenes, too. There are anime-styled panels like in Phantasy Star IV or Fire Emblem. There's FMVs, largely made popular by Final Fantasy. A few games integrate their scenes more directly with the rest of the game, using the same character models and so on. There are others I've forgotten to list, too. What kind of cutscene do you think is the best for a game to use?

I think it depends on the game itself and whatever works best. If it is presented in a way that looks great and goes well with the game, then I'll be happy.

I will have to agree with Tsunami on this one. Integrated cut-scenes, used in Gears of War and other "Next-Gen" games, tend to work because of how the story is written, how the gameplay unfolds, and small factors. Attempting to apply the same style of cutscene to say, Final Fantasy XIII, and it may lose some of it's purpose. XIII could be a bad example, though, seeing as how it's supposedly more like an action-RPG than the others...

I also agree with Tsunami, simply put. I have no preference for one style or the other, it depends on the game, what looks good with it, and how well it's integrated into the general flow of the game.
Next Pokemon game(s): Pearl
Last finished Pokémon game: Shield
Other games: Skyrim Special Edition (Switch), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch & PS4), Okami (Switch & PS4)
Other gaming goals: completing a Living Pokedex (minus some event Pokes) and going through at least 1 game per generation
