Hope everyone had a Good Memorial Day weekend and Memorial Day Monday. Today (Tuesday) May 30 is the traditional Memorial Day. This is one of those holidays that has been changed in order to have a 3 day weekend, etc.

Well, there is also Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, etc, which are all considered magic realism. I think Brazilian advantage comes from what the president of our supreme court said recently when criticizing some absurd situations: "In Brazil, magic realism happens everyday"

Always found it interesting that Portuguese literature is widely known for its highly sophisticated magical realism, which as far as I'm aware is some of the most well-regarded speculative fiction in the world, whereas aside from Jorge Luis Borges Spanish hasn't fared as well in that department.

The only mentions you see to these books in the web are blogs where people say "I had a short story published" or "a friend of mine had a story published"

In this case it was not special, given the level of the other stories published in the same collections. They are Brazilian collections (in Portuguese) from small publishing houses that mostly publish books for people willing to pay to have their books published, and from time to time open up collections hoping that the authors themselves will buy many copies.

Hey, publication is publication, congrats on that. Nothing wrong with short stories, either, it's arguably harder to write a good short story than it is to write a novel. Which collections were they in?
