Bird drawing-Scarlet Tanager

Postby Wolf Bird » Thu Aug 5, '10, 6:39 pm

New drawing! This time a Scarlet Tanager. This is my first one where oil pastel is the main medium. It's all oil pastel except the wings, tail, beak and eye. I think I have learning to do with pastel, and I smeared things a bit, but all in all, happy with it. I think pastel and colored pencil work well together.

Ah nice work Caged! :D It's nice to see another of your drawings. Besides that we don't get any birds quite so vibrant around here.

Yes, pastels can be notorious for smudging. The best thing to do, though timely, is to apply the pastel then blow any excess off the paper and check your hands before continuing. It's the sort of medium that gets everywhere.

Beautiful bird, CW. Amazing! I don't think I have ever seen one of those birds around her either....I would remember that one, I think, as it is so lovely.

An absolutely beautiful bird drawing CW. You've used the pastel medium very well in here, and it really gives the whole image a more natural look, with the texture that the pastels provide. It's very hard to obtain a look like this with pencil crayons or normal pencil shading.

Great work!

Wow, that's strikingly vibrant. I've never seen a bird with a red body quite that bright. It makes the red birds and woodpeckers we have around here look very dim.

You did a great job, especially for your first time with the medium!

Nice colouring CW, that bird reminds me of the little wild finches we get around here.
