Longer School days

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Mon Dec 3, '12, 10:25 pm

Well, there has been talk for years now about adding more hours to the current school day and it looks like it will finally happen now:

My extreme sympathies to any students who may be forced into this situation. :x

Isn't the school day long enough now???

Being in high school, I completely agree with this :D

I'm not in any of the affected states, but I think there are better ways to improve academic performance than just extending the (already long) school year. IMHO, it's not how much time you spend in school that matters, it's how you use that time to your advantage. Anyway, good luck to everyone who will be affected by this in the future.

I've been expecting more schools to switch to a longer year for a while. I remember some talk about doing away with summer vacation entirely at one point, but I think that fell apart because of negative impact on farming communities. Longer days are definitely not going to help much, though. Aside from costing a lot of high school students their after school jobs, a student can be pretty tired after an eight hour school day. Tagging on another hour for won't help a mind that is already in need of rest to focus better. Gonna cut into study and homework time, too.

Education may need reform, but this isn't a good approach for it.
