Various animals, including dogs, horses, mules, pigeons, etc., are being featured along with other war heroes in an exhibit at the National World War 2 Museum:

It's hard to imagine horses or mules being used in a modern war setting. I had no idea they were used in WWII. Pigeons and dogs make sense, but I would have thought horses and mules would have been passed over in favor of motor vehicles. Well, it's good to learn something new about history.
