McCartney and Starr had played a lot together in albums, but the magic is not there. It is just a good musician doing session work for another good one.
There was something in their way of working which could never be reproduced, even if a full reunion had taken place (if it was possible). Like, for example, The Moody Blues had 7 majestic albums from 67 to 72. Then, they went into a hiatus and returned in 78. They were still good, but the magic was not there anymore.
Most of the bands which survived till today are like that. Stones, for example, are great, but they cant reproduce the 64 to 74 magic unless by playing the old songs (and sometimes not even so)
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.
