Bird Drawing - Flock and Trees

Postby Wolf Bird » Sun Jan 6, '13, 2:35 pm

No idea what to call this one. My brother's girlfriend took some pictures from the van during our road trip (10 hours!) from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. She asked me to translate one of her photos into a drawing, and add something to it. Naturally, birds. This is all charcoal pencil, a lot of the sky effect done with a wet paper towel, and a blurring effect on the trees to reflect a feeling of motion. I also like assymettry and the law of thirds, hence the flock of birds being off to one side and the emptiness in the middle. Plus, trying to capture a dreary December day.

10 hours for a road trip ?? :o Impressive ! But a very instructive one, as it has permited you to draw a lot of very nice drawings !
The blurring effect on the trees is great and let us sense a great emotional wave.
Congratulations on this one too

I really like this one!! You have captured a dreary December day magnificently!! The birds being on one side really enhances the drawing I think. Makes me think of many sights similar to this one that I have seen at various times. I love watching flocks of birds as they fly over where we live...such a beautiful site to see always!!

Yep, that definitely looks like December. The flock reminds me of a group that was in my yard the other day. That flock was passing through while were trying to avoid a cold front that has since moved in. Of course, there were a lot more birds than in the picture, but they were just as black.

I also like the use of having the birds off to the side that you mentioned. It helps to convey the motion of the flock as they travel.
