Disbelief

Disbelief - that is one of the emotions that crosses the face of Chaz as he realizes that Alys, his teacher and surrogate mother, has passed away. She must have seemed invincible to him. Alys was the most skilled and successful of all the Hunters, but now he sees that everyone, even the Eight Stroke Sword, is mortal.

Chaz's emotions are very evident here. Disbelief, and perhaps a little anger there too, hmm? Quite understandable given the occasion though.
