Magnetic Island

Postby Lucas » Sun Jan 9, '11, 1:03 am

Yesterday me and the rest of my family went to Magnetic Island which is a small Island off the coast of North Queensland. Takes about half an hour to get their by ferry. We ended up going hiking up one of hills to reach an old war fort takes roughly forty-five minutes to reach the top. I took a lot of photos, but I'm just gonna share these ones with you guys the rest have family members in them, and some didn't turn out all that great either. It's a magnificent place, so much wildlife and it's so green. I thought of posting this in Casual Conversation originally but I feel a lot of this scenery can be considered a work of art
Enjoy!

I had to take photo of this, the guy must have been drunk or having a very bad day to bolt the Koala sign sideways, the rest of the signs on the island were the correct way up except this one.

The War Fort it was visible at about 900m to the top of the hill.

This is civilisation from the top of the hill, I took this photo standing on top of the war fort. (Very green  )

Image
This was the only Koala we seen in the wild, we wouldn’t have seen it, if someone didn't leave rocks lying on the ground spelling the world “Up”. So naturally you look up right?

I think that Koala sign was turned intentionally. It just looks like something that would become an internet meme.

That is some beautiful scenery. That one with the water would make a wonderful desktop background. Thanks for sharing these with us, Lucas! :D

Terrific photos, Lucas!

Thanks for sharing them with us. :)

I agree, it is a very beautiful place there. Everything is so green! The little Kaola looks cute from what I can see of him. That fort looks interesting too. Is there some history surrounding it? Also, those rocks that the fort seems to be sitting on look awesome too, especially the way they are placed!!!

Looks like a nice place to visit.

Yes the fort has a little bit of history it was mainly a look out and place to store cannons. There was other smaller parts of other forts back down the hill to, but most of them were destroyed by age and weather.

I had another question but forgot to ask it in my previous post, so here goes....

Lucas, Why do they call it "Magnetic" Island?? That's a very unusual and interesting name, I think.

Beautiful photos. We need more rock wallabies hanging around here in Sao Paulo.

Side note: Is it true that wallabies (or kangaroos or both) are like rats or household pests of the sort in Australia?

@ Gryz: No, no cannons are around the forts anymore, but during world war 1 and 2 they were.

@ SS: Apparently when Captain Cook was sailing past QLD his compass started going crazy when he got closer to Magnetic Island. The Island is not Magnetic in anyway and lots of people believe he was seeing things due to illness. But that's the reason why, so he called it Magnetic Island.

@ H-Man: Sadly no, the only people lucky enough to have any marsupials for pets would be wildlife carers and similar people.

So I stayed up late last night. And while channel surfing came across a travel program that featurred Magnetic Island. Was interesting to see it in video form after having seen your still images Lucas.
