Who should McCain choose as VP?

Who do you think John McCain will choose, or should choose, as his vice-presidential running mate on the Republican ticket, and tell us why you think so in a post below.

Also, tell us who you think he will NOT choose, and why.

No matter what, McCain has a ton of factors to consider in his choice. He should NOT choose Newt Gingrich, as choosing that man would probably turn off more voters than it brings to him.

But who he should choose...well, he has to be careful. He doesn't have much appeal to a conservative base, but at the same time, that may be why he attracted a lot of independents at the primaries. If he chooses someone like Huckabee, he may lose those independents, but if he chooses someone like Tom Ridge, nothing will be added to the ticket and he'll still have a hard time attracting conservatives. I think his best choice may be Mitt Romney, because he seems to be the best compromise to try to appeal to conservatives and maintain some attraction for independents.

When the chosen boy reaches the point, he will find the light. The passing of time will shatter the nightmare rock and will reveal the path of light.

Very good and interesting points! I agree about not choosing Gingrich. I used to like the man when he was Speaker Of The House years ago, but not so much anymore. I don't think he is all that trustworthy, but that is a point to wonder about with anyone these days and times, I suppose.

I hadn't thought about Tom Ridge, but that's a very interesting choice. I like Ridge, to some extent and think he may do well, but I dunno.

I really like Huckabee and hope that McCain may choose him, but I dunno there either. That would be my pick right now.

Romney seems very likable, and has a very broad band of support, I know, however I don't know if he and McCain get along all that well together or not, although it wouldn't be the first time a Pres and VP have not gotten along together well. :wink:

If he choose Condoleeza Rice, he might be getting the support of more blacks and more women, which might go well against whoever the Democratic nomination might be (Obama or Clinton). Also, she has a good bit of experience in areas that would proove very helpful, I think. She might bring a great deal to McCain's campaign.

Whoever he may choose, I heard that he said he will make a decision before the convention meeting, so that is something that is worth waiting to hear.

Hey, as I was typing the previous post, it just occurred to me, another possible choice for McCain might be Jeb Bush (brother of current Pres. George Bush and a former Florida Governor). Whadayathink??????

It probably wouldn't go too well, though, as it would be too much a reminder of the current Presidency and I think in some ways, people want to get away from that as much as possible. Know what I mean? Although, it would be a perfect set up for another Bush Presidency a few years from now, which I believe will definetely happen at some point and time in the future.

I doubt Bush would want the job. That whole family is not very popular in a political sense right now.

His best choices would probably be Huckabee or Romney. I think Romney would be a last resort choice. Those two really got along poorly before Romney dropped out of the race. Huckabee would be better, I think.

Rice might be good, but bringing her in would look too much like playing the race and gender cards. It would be an "obvious" ploy, rather than choosing her for her qualifications and experience.

Thought I would bump this topic back up as I heard someone say on Fox news tonight that some VP (vice president) choices could come out as early as next week. Wow, that would be news worthy. I'm so ready to find out who the other half of these political tickets will be.

As far as McCain, I'm hearing some talk lately about Joe Liberman as his VP, although the top choice may still be Mitt Romney. I actually heard someone talking about Huckabee as vp the other day, though too.

Condoleesa Rice is OUT as a vp choice from what I heard her say on an interview a week or so ago. She said "no" that she was not interested that it was time for her to go back to other things and for new blood to take charge, and I believe she really meant it.

One other choice that McCain might actually win with and that would be General Colin Powell. I haven't heard if Powell might be interested in it at all in any way, though. He would be a wonderful VP candidate, I think, and then perhaps a great President later on.

I heard a day or so ago that Florida Governor Charlie Crist has gotten himself engaged. I didn't even know he was a bachelor, lol. Best wishes to the happy couple.

Some news reporters were wondering if this engagement/marriage is happening now due to McCain's possible interest in the Florida Governor as a vice-presidential running mate. That's an interesting possibility, I think, as they have seemed rather chummy since McCain won the nomination.

There hasn't been a bachelor vice-president for many, many, many years. I heard who the last one was on the news report, but I've forgotten it now.

So, I wonder if McCain will choose the Florida Governor?????????? :hmm:
