Post subject: The most touching death scene? PostPosted: Sun Nov 30, '08, 2:18 pm

Which character in the series, in your opinion, had the most touching death scene? This includes anyone that died in the games - from the obvious like Nei and Alys to the less talked about like Ayn and Thea. Even the bad guys, like Zio or Lashiec, who had unusual farewells.

I can't say for sure, since I didn't finish most of the games; but I'll go with Nei's death. She never quite got the chance to live a happy, unprejudiced life, did she? I guess that's what provokes my sympathy to her, even if the death scene itself is simple.

Most touching or emotional is hard to nail down, but I'd say the most significant death is Alys, easily. She's pretty much the main character up until that point, so it's surprising when she's offed rather abruptly. Up until then, she's the dominant personality in all of the cutscenes and is calling all of the shots. She's the one with the established reputation, and she has this history with Rune that you expect to see elaborated on at some point in the game, but it never comes to pass. There's also the curious details of having an unknown age and sharing a near-identical name with PS1's main character, even if that is only an artifact of the localization.

I'm going to have to agree with Sixfortyfive. I couldn't have said it better, but I'm going to add that Alys also seems to be a parental figure to Chaz and Rika. So that adds additional impact because suddenly these two have their only parental figure taken from them. I just think Alys' death has the most significance. I think this also makes it quite emotional.
All I need to know in life I learned from Earthbound
1. No matter how bad you're hurt, eat enough food and your wounds will heal.
Just be sure to use the right condiment.
2. A baseball bat is a better weapon than any sword.
3. If you have an egg, wait about three minutes for it to become a chicken you can sell for $110.
4. Stonehenge is actually an alien base.
5. Dinosaurs aren't really extinct, they just live underground.

6. The average teddy bear is an effective shield against all attacks, even death rays.
7. Viruses don't cause colds...robots and UFOs do.
8. Always check inside the trash cans along city streets, they may have some useful stuff!
9. Even in the middle of nowhere, SOMEONE will come buy your stuff if you put up a 'For Sale' sign.
10. Never, under any circumstances, follow pretty blond women into hotels.

As for me I have to agree with Heikabuchi who agrees with Caged Wolf on agreeing with Sixfortyfive.

Does anyone else find it ironic that, as your virtual character gains experience,
wealth and social stature;
Your reality character is losing the exact same things at the same rate?

That's true. She had maybe six-eight months of living happily in just two years of life. Poor Nei just never got a fair shake at the world.

For me it was Nei's death because it was unpredictable and it was very bitter, because it was like no one outside of the group cared about her and were even glad that she'd gone.

About Alys' death, for me, was predictable and unnecessarely "emotional". These exaggerated things don't please me.

bah, i couldn't give a stuff about Nei.
No, seriously i didn't feel much from it, didn't read into it to see any implications like "oh, she was so young and innocent and devoted to Rolf".
Seems my way of thinking is at odds with some of the people here, who like to have storylines that you have to kind read into to get something out of them. At this point in my life, I can't be stuffed with a game that makes you have to work really hard in order to connect with it. PS 4 obviously helps you along in term of gameplay and storyline. You don't need to go over the story twice in order to enjoy it and understand the implications of it.

I'd have to say I found Nei's death more sad because PSII is a hard game so you spend more time with your characters building them up and buying them the strongest items so they can stand a chance in the hard dungeons.

So yeah I spent around proabaly 15-17 hours in total with Nei. and like 2-4 hours with Alys in total. Not to metion Alys died quite early into PSIV so I never felt attached to her like I did with Nei.
